Dave Smetter is director of brand management and communications at Black Hills Energy with corporate headquarters in Rapid City, South Dakota. He oversees brand management, marketing, advertising, creative services and digital strategy for Black Hills Energy. Dave has many years of experience in leading brand management, marketing, marketing communications, digital strategy, public relations, employee communications and crisis communications.
His experience includes senior leadership roles in marketing, communications and public relations with Wells Enterprises, Inc. (Blue Bunny Ice Cream), the largest American owned ice cream manufacturer in the U.S., headquartered in Le Mars, Iowa, and MercyOne, part of the Trinity Health System, in Sioux City, Iowa. Early in his career he spent a decade in broadcast journalism.
Throughout his career Dave has been actively involved in a number of various boards and commissions at the local, regional and state levels. He has led training on communication skills and media relations to local and state law enforcement agencies and first responders. Dave is certified in crisis management through the National Incident Management System (NIMS) administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
